It was a flying boat. Used as a tanker and for passengers/cargo for a couple of years in the '50s.

Google images has plenty, including box tops of a Revell model kit I did not
know existed.

Page 195 has a picture of a Tradewind as tanker.

Page 68 has a picture of a Cessna 620. 1956 must have been the year I saw it
in a Cessna ad in "Flying". Five seats, four engines!? What were they
thinking? It was faster than the 310, but that's about all one would have
gotten for the extra complexity, fuel burn, and maintenance.

I turned 11 in 1956. My first reaction to the ad was that the 620 existed to
fulfill some rich private pilot's fantasy of flying a four-engine airliner.

IMO, Mr. Cessna did well by putting the thing out of his misery.

No, I did not read all 400+ pages. I just skimmed, admiring the ads and the
pictures up to about page 180.

Thanks for the link. Lotsa memories there, due to my father the electrical
engineer for a defense contractor, as well as my own intense interest in
aircraft.

Actually I think he was a couple of decades out of the picture by then...

I thought, but may have misremembered, that the only example was broken up.

Planes In Production - as at 1956 . . .

Hi Reams,
Well that sucked up some of my time<grin>.

So I found the root directory for all of their Aircraft & Aerospace Yearbooks 1919~1970. Ran through the one for 1919. Fascinating!

Regards,
Tom Charlton

The early versions are interesting.
I enjoyed reading Wilbur Wright's own article regarding developments and flying at Kitty Hawk.

Thanks

Somehow - being too close to the Martin aircraft - I had totally missed this Convair Seaplane. Seems like I only had the Catalina and the SeaDart in my head as a Convair seaplanes...

I have never seen or heard of the Taylorcraft model 20.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taylorcraft_Ranch_Wagon

And there were different versions.

(I should turn in my "airport bum" badge)

Hi Jeff,
Nor had I.

Also of note in the Wikipedia entry:
Quote:

The Model 20 was constructed of molded fiberglass over a tubular framework.

No frumpy fabric covering here!

Seen a number of Aeronca and Luscombe four seat “sedans” over the years. Actually got a nice tour of San Diageo last February in a beautifully restored Luscombe sedan.

Thomasina - My first flight was in an Aeronca Sedan. IIRC, the model was a 15AC. 145 horse Continental.

Hi Randy,
Ya but . . . did you get to ride in the front seat?<g>

My first flight was in a Tri-Pacer. In the back seat dammit with some large girl . . . while her little brother got to ride UP FRONT and actually TOUCH the controls.
And I’ve been like this ever since<g>.

Regards,
Tom Charlton (if only they’d known what a great pilot I was destined to be<g>)

It looks like a smooth-skinned Stinson 108, except for the empennage.

Thanks for finding that gem!

Best,
Andy
