C-97G Restoration Due For First Flight

Rnady,
I don't know if you were aware of this project or not. This will be great news if they pull it off! Interesting that it's at Floyd Bennett. That's a short runway!!

Hi Andy,
Thanks for posting that. I was aware of this effort but hadn’t checked progress in a while.
Lots of fond memories having been an asst. Crew Chief on a KC-97G whilst stationed at Pease AFB back in 1964/65. These guys got’a be some kind’a dedicated and or nuts. Operation of those R4360s will make operating a B-29 look cheap in comparison.

Really enjoy when Capt. Randy shares his tons of memories and stories associated with the Stratocruiser.

Regards,
Tom Charlton

Wasn't aware of it but it's gotta be Tim at the Berlin Airlift Foundation deal, I'll talk to Tim and find out. I always figured 500 GPH fuel consumption on it, 7790 total.

Randy,
Tell him my biggest questions are around what runways are still open there? I understood they were all closed/derelict, with only FDNY/NYPD/NYC government help ops permitted from a couple of pads.

Are they planning on landing back at Floyd Bennett or doing an aerial re-spot to a better airport for sustained operations?

Best,
Andy

Andy -- From my flights overhead, I think 6/24 is pretty much intact (once they move cars off it), and it's probably 5,000'+.

Scott and Adm. Andy, yup, it's closed but moved it there for storage with a PPO, made interesting ops!

My, you ARE a dreamer, ain't'cha! Chuckle!

Haven't been back to either place since I went back there to give Tim a 61.58 in their C-54. And yes, it IS an R-5D. Tim was surprised until I had him look at the overhead panel (generators).

best, randy

They're currently in a battle with the Feds. Seems there is no one in the world who is current in the C-97, therefore no one who can be PIC to get anytime else current. Tim says they are working it out.
