There must have been an orchestra aboard, because I see a good conductor.

There's not supposed to be a lot of TRW activity around Kef. Ooops.

I would bet Randy has at least a dozen strikes...although I read a lot of airline strikes are not found until the next inspection.

I have 5, 4 turbine, 1 piston. No major damage, one antenna (comm 2) and a few static wicks. Another needed a prop blade overhauled, and a flap trailing edge repair.

I don't think any of mine were as dramatic as the pictured one.

Aircraft lightning strikes

In the United States, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has a system in place to track lightning strikes on commercial aircraft. The reported statistical results indicate that lightning strike frequency is such that every commercial aircraft gets one and a half strikes per year and commercial pilots experience this phenomenon once every 3,000 flight hours. Although general aviation aircraft are not required to report these incidents, the U.S. Department of Transportation has conducted a research project which was completed in 2004 and is titled "General Aviation Lightning Strike Report and Protection Level Study."

Speaking of positive and negative charges...

I was on an aluminum boat on Lake Okeechobee years ago, about 10am, puffy clouds starting to form. Noticed my fishing buddy's hair standing up, he said mine was also...made a cast and the line stayed in the air in an arc. Headed for shore... Anyone ever experience static like that?

Yup, but like you and and others on here that photo at the beginning sure got my attention! Made me recall the absolute worst of mine, didn't have to wait for the next 74 inspection to find it, the Japanese mechanics saw it right way when I docked at Narita! Just off-shore SE of Tokyo while I was being vectored to get behind one of those "white whales" (JAL 747s, chuckle, meb'be JD was flying it). BAM!!!!!!!!!! I've often wondered if anyone happened to get a photo of that one, spectacular!

best, randy

On the golf course once. Hair standing up; got outta there pronto!
Once in an A-36 going to Bahamas we penetrated a cell but were safe when lightning flashed very closely: nieces had feet up off the floor. :)
