Hi Mase,
The A-10. Butt ugly. I love it. Any pencil neck politician that want’s to retire/replace this proven weapon needs to be escorted out back of the woodshed for a discussion.

Tom Charlton

Thanks,

Yes, it's a obvious fact that the F-35 cannot do anything like the A-10 in terms of ground support. A big "duh" for the top brass and the Military industrial complex and the money for so many congressional districts.

I don't think the USAF top folks ever liked the A-10. Not sure they wanted that much direct ground support and would rather fly fighters and big bombers.

We love them in Tucson -quiet, fun to watch, already have new wings, old gun works just fine as well as the engines.

I still think much of the F-35 program is military -industrial-political stuff for a C- airframe and perhaps D grade mission performance.

OK, so we have to move forward with this -too much money and congressional districts even with a vastly overpriced warplane. Sigh.

Regards,

Dux

Well, another example of that great A-10.

I think that for most training missions, they slow the extremely fast firing rate. Still, it would be a bad place to be driving your team of tanks -or fuel trucks, or on a machine gun nest with the enemy.

Dux -soon to leave sunny Tucson

Nope, the gun has spin up time. The quoted rate is after the gun is up to full speed.

When I flew it, we had two rates, Hi was 4200 rounds per minute, low was 2100.

At low rate, a 1 second pull was about 35 rounds due to spin up.

Terry,

No experience with the '30', but the 11Bs sure liked the '20' when they needed some help inside of hand grenade range. :-)

30 is like the 20, but bigger.

1.2 pound projectile at some 3600 feet per second, plus aircraft speed, is a bit of kinetic energy, even with a steel slug (target practice ammo).

There was a story of a tank being on the wrong range, and a pair of A-10s also on the wrong range, and they both ended up on the same range. The A-10s got a mobility kill on the tank, using TP ammo.

There are few things in life that would give me more pleasure in life than to be in the room when the new Secretary of Defense (Mad Dog Mattis) meets with top AF generals to discuss CAS and the A-10 v. their expensive, one high tech plane does everything for a bunch more money position :).

Hi Dave,
Yup, look’n forward to some interesting times ahead. I see DT has already weighed in on an outrageously over budget new AF-1.

Tom Charlton

Yeah, Boeing made the mistake of advocating free and fair trade and immediately got hammered for saying something in violation of the Party line.

If DT doesn't want to keep the Ex Im Bank's guarantee program, I am sure that the European Development Bank will be glad to step in and guarantee Airbus purchases. And, in other industries, the Chinese Development Bank or the Chinese Ag Development Bank will do likewise.

Besides, the bank doesn't cost taxpayers anything....

I really don't get killing it on purely political philosophy grounds.

Except that it's not. The contract for the airplanes hasn't even been let. The only contact that Boeing has concerning the AF1 is a $170M contract to study requirements and define the specs.

Typical hip shooting in response to a statement by the BAC CEO concerning free trade.
