If he were perpendicular to the board, that would make sense. He's perpendicular to the gravity vector, with his center of gravity notably closer to the fulcrum than his feet are, awaiting the lifting impulse, which does follow an arc.

(I think the crane thing is a clever fake. An acceleration that brief and that strong would kill the guy. Here's a video of real people doing something similar. Note the vectors they can get from such a fancy schmancy teeter totter.)
