Hi Ralph,

Not sporting a pocket protector and no tape on the bridge of my spectacles, I had to google it. Cute.

I'm not sure how many people are working in octal on a daily basis anymore. I think that was associated with "big machines" back in the day.

Today, PCs and even small stuff tends to be Hex.

(I had to Google it too. - and I've worked with octal.)

I used to work on assembly language listings on the subway in the 1970s,
working on patches. Sometimes I could feel the people sitting next to me,
watching my arithmetic, sitting on their hands in order to not try to correct
my arithmetic as I wrote things like 12 - 3 = 7

We would drive out of New York City from midtown, on the West Side. From
55th street you could see the the traffic levels on the raised West Side High
highway -- back before it fell down -- and decide to take 11th Avenue up.

At 57th 11th becomes West End Avenue, which eventually peters out when it
hits Broadway at 106th Street. At that point you have to duck one block east
to Amsterdam, where you turn north and then turn left at 110th to pick up
Riverside Drive, and then up to the George Washington Bridge.

One day I was driving (I was about eighteen; the moment I got my driver's
license and I was available, my dad had me drive while he slept on the way
home). I was on West End, and as I drove through the fifties, then the
sixties, and then the seventies, when we got to something like 75th Street,
I remember thinking, "Good...we're almost there."

I was distracted or fatigued enough to be thinking that 100th Street would
come right after 77th Street.

That was back when the GW was 50 cents each way. What is it now 5 bucks one way? I used to commute from Mt. Lakes to Fort Washington Ave, NYC for Guard drills, about the same time.

Reminds me of getting used to digital watches. A time or two I'd read 9:50 as 9.5 and think I had half an hour until 10:00.

Garden State Parkway was set up that way. 25-cent tolls every few miles, and
when the bond issues were paid off, the tolls would end.

Eventually it reached a point where the tolls didn't quite cover the costs of
collecting the tolls, never mind the bonds.

At that point they started raising the rates, eventually getting rid of half
the toll booths and doubling the rates, and so on. But they'll never go
away; at some point it was noticed that the road requires maintenance. What
a surprise!

Now I have EZ-Pass, and I basically pretend that there aren't any tolls
anywhere. It removes a lot of stress. Cripes, I crossed the GW Bridge twice
in the last two days, and drove about 400 miles on the NY Thruway. I don't
even want to think about the tolls -- and with EZ-Pass, I don't have to.

I-95 between Baltimore and the DE line had tolls on it in the 70s. To pay for it.

And when it was paid off, they went away. Never to return.

So it CAN happen that way.

Tolls came off the CT Turnpike and the Merritt Parkway about 30 years ago. IIRC, that was after a bad crash when a truck crashed into a line of cars at a toll plaza and killed a bout seven people.

I seem to recall that, technically, roads in the Interstate Highway System
are not allowed to have tolls.

For many years, the entire length of I95 in New Jersey, otherwise known as
the "The New Jersey Turnpike" (a toll road), had "I95" signs on the side that
had the additional sign "TO" mounted above them.

Ah. Google to the rescue. Sort of. Interstates can have tolls, but if they
do, no Federal funds shall be expended on them. Unless such expenditures are
permitted by law.

I suspect that, with a good memory and a reasonable ability to think
logically, being a lawyer isn't all that hard...as long as you have the
*time* to follow through on all those "unless"es.

Back in the day, we used to say the decimal system, based on the number of
human digits was a mistake. It's actually base eight with two parity bits
(thumbs).
