I had Windows 7 on a high end ThinkPad and had experienced a Blue Screen of Death and a number of other faults which led me to go ahead and instal Windows 10. However, i did it the easy way. I took it to a MicroSoft store and had them install it for free and prove to me that everything was working correctly. So far I'm satisfied. Access, Excel, Word and Outlook all work fine. It also found my two wireless printers in different rooms.

Rod,
I'm waiting for SP2, at least; same thing I did for W7. It seems that much like OSX Yosemite, it's better as a fresh install than as an over-write.

At least has the little trick of clicking on the upper left corner to make it look like W7.

Best,
Andy

Um, Win7 never had a SP2.

SP, "fixes," "updates," whatever they were called, as long as it's not the 1.0 of anything.

This network administrator says MS is installing Windows 10 on 7 and 8 computers. I looked and didn't see any files. Any thoughts on this?

Dave
==================================================

It all started when an Inquirer reader found, hiding in the hidden directory $Windows.~BT on his PC, all of the Windows 10 installation files, even though he had not “reserved” a copy. Up to 6GB worth of them.

Some people were a mite upset about this. Especially people with small solid-state drives and slow Internet speeds.

Just checked, and yes, they've done it to my machines.

You won't see it unless you have "Show hidden files" checked under Control Panel->Folder Options->View.

According to a report on this issue in Ars Technica, the updater attempts to
install W10 as well. You have to kill it manually.

Also, Microsoft is retrofitting all the W10 spyware into 7 and 8 as "updates".

I see no sign of it on mine. But then it's in hibernate mode unless I'm actually using it.

      #415533 - 09/19/15 09:47 PM Attachment (114 downloads)

No sign of it on the real PC running W7Pro or the Mac, running the same version via Parallels. Did an update on both today (last update was 8/13/15 for both). Checked before and after that, nope (and yes, hidden files are shown, I think the desktop.ini files visible on the Desktop are a hint <g>).

I manually update Win, and only install "Important updates". Both machines are running gen-u-ine MS OEM versions of W7Pro, no idea if that makes a difference <shrug>

Nothing looking evil here...
