Printer malfunction?
      #140920 - 01/18/07 08:58 PM

All,

I'm used to computers and printers doing strange things, but this latest
manifestation of weirdness has me completely perplexed.

I have a 73 page document which I printed out and brought to a local copy
shop to have 10 copies made. It turns out that an entire line (except for
the first word) was left out on page 40 (this is after I've paid for all ten
copies to be bound). When I discovered this I went back to my computer,
opened the doc file, and looked at page 40. The entire line was there. I
didn't know what to make of it, so I printed the page. It came out fine.
So, I printed ten more copies of it. Only one of them printed properly; the
other nine all had the same error as I've mentioned!

This is driving me crazy. Why won't the printer print the page correctly
all the time, or even incorrectly all the time? For those wanting the
technical details, the program I'm using is Microsoft Office Word 2003 and
the printer is a Lexmark X63.

Irv,

Was the page that printed correctly the 1st?

I've seen that happen with letters, when the template I'm using doesn't match
the letter size. Perhaps there is a mismatch between the margins set in Word
and the margins on your printer.

Ron,

Yes, the correct page was the first one. When I printed the first
complete set of 73 pages, page 40 was only printed once, but it had the error.

I don't think that it's a margin issue, since the text is complete except
for that one line that only has one word on it with the rest of the line
being blank. The following line continues with the same text as in the page
that printed correctly. Correction: the misprinted page has only the first
*letter* of the first word, not the entire first word. The rest of the line
is blank. I'm still stymied.

You might try and see if there's an updated printer driver for your printer.

Irv,

Well I would first ensure that the page size is correct in Windows; and then
that the margins are at least as large as the non-printable area for your
printer.

If that checks out, I'd check to see if there is an updated driver for your
printer.

You could also try printing to a different printer -- perhaps a PDF file if
you have the capability.

Ron,

I'm not sure how to do that. On the page setup I've got left margin at
1.2", right margin at 1.3" and top and bottome margins at 1". Print preview
and print to cutepdf both yield correct pages.

I'll look for an updated driver.

Ron,

I updated the driver and printed two copies of page 40. The first one was
fine, the second one had the aforementioned error.

And yet when you print two copies to preview or cute PDF it's fine? Time to talk to printer tech support.

Irv,

I assume cutepdf generates a pdf document. Since preview also gives you a
normal output, perhaps you need to call the printer tech support people.
Another option might be to print the PDF document, if that gives output of
good enough quality.

Russell,

Printing two copies to cutepdf does not produce the error. I don't know
how to print two copies to preview.

Ron,

Well, I'm not going to reprint the entire document again. Too expensive
to have it copied and bound. I just printed out ten copies of page 40 (one
at a time) and I'll give them out to the actors and tell them to replace the
page 40 that they have in their scripts.

What I'm concerned about is this happening again. I don't want to have to
proofread 73 pages (or more) of every document that I print out. I proofread
the document on my monitor, and I would hope that would be sufficient, but
apparently not.

Irv,

I'd be interested in what the printer tech support people have to say.
