Replacement Power Supply?
      #140230 - 01/12/07 09:43 AM

Looks like one of my Dell Dimension 8400 systems just ate a power supply.

Any suggestions where I might find a replacement, possibly one with a bit more "Umph" (>350W) ?

Ever since the CompuUSA around here went Tango Uniform I've managed to waste a lot of time on:

http://www.newegg.com/

and

http://www.tigerdirect.com/

I've spent a fair bit of money there, too, but not much of it has been wasted. <g>

Regards,
Joe

I buy almost all my hardware from Newegg and I've had excellent results with them.

Tiger Direct has received some attention from the BBB.

I have been very happy with the units for Seasonics. They are very efficient and very quiet. Also, the power they produce is very clean.

Tom,

I've never used 'em, but PCPower&Cooling has a good rep on various fora. There's a Dell selector also, which includes this 470W supply for the 8400.

Hth,

Thanks Jim,

I may ultimately get one if the load I'm putting on it is too much, but Dell is offering a 350w replacement PS for less than $30, so I'm going to get one of those first.

I will keep the pointer you provided just in case.

Thanks to everybody who replied here, I do appreciate the help.

When I think of how much damage a screwed-up power supply can do to expensive
computer hardware, I lose all temptation to save money on a power supply.
I've been buying power supplies from PC Power and Cooling for years, and been
very happy with them.

Hmmm - Good Point ...

I'm don't think I'm overstressing the stock PS (so say the numbers) and Dell SHOULD be putting in an acceptable PS. I think it just died.

I'll see what happens with the replacement from Dell. If it so much as sneezes, or when I go to expand that particular system I'll look seriously at PP&C for the replacement.

Thank You for the wake-up.

Well, I guess that's true, its possible it could screw up the computer hardware itself, but honestly I think that's very rare. The overwhelmingly common failure mode is for one of the output voltages to just die, and go to no output. In building my own PC's from parts since the XT days, I don't think I've ever seen a power supply burn up a motherboard or CPU. I'm sure it happens, just not that common. On one hand I'd not buy an "el cheapo" no-name power supply for my PC, but on the other I think that $149 is a ridiculous price for a 470W supply. I'm currently running a nice Antec case with a 450W Antec power supply, and by buying a "second" direct from Antec, I paid less than $100 for the combo.

Gary,

Many Dell boxes have, amongst other things, unique pin configs. Physical dimensions (no pun intended) also play a part. PC Power&Cooling addresses those Dell specific issues.
