Mali Hotel Attack
      #418110 - 11/22/15 10:59 PM

From the New York Times six crew members from the airline Volga-Dnepr were killed in the attack. Six other crew members were among those who were rescued. The crew was flying an Volga-Dnepr AN124 from Oslo to Mali.

A link to the Volga-Dnepr website.

Bill, when I got to fly that AN-124 at OSH in 1989, Vladimir Tersky was the captain, V. had it over here on this side of the pond to deliver some airframes to Florida.

Randy,

When I was reading this I couldn't help but think this could have just as easily been a U.S. based company such as K4, Southern, Atlas, ATI and any of the numerous ACMIs and non-sch. 121s. They perform a tremendous service flying into some very dangerous and remote places through out the world.

Being a freight-dog is a "tough way to make an easy living."

And many of those locations, there are only one or two suitable hotels.

I was in Bishkek with, IIRC, and Atlas crew in the hotel for a couple of days.

Yup, I know. But then I thought about a few of our overnight places in Bolivia.

Sigh, I assume that Delta still operates the mostly crew hotel in Narita. When I retired there were well over 300 (Northwest) crewmembers in the hotel every night 365 days. Every afternoon we would launch about 15 B-747s to various locations including USA and SE asia. The aircraft would arrive around noon-then leave around 5pm. The B-747F crews had their own (sorta) schedules.

This was some time ago and not a lot of security around the hotel -but a LOT of security at the airport.

Regards,

Dux

Chuckle - and I also believe that nearly every one of them was in line waiting for that little restaurant to open for breakfast!

I always said "sooner or later you're going to see everyone that you know in this business waiting in that line".
