Yes, it was sorta a dream job except for the long furloughs (5 years), strikes with a picket sign, 12-13 day Orient trips and returning in a 3 day state of shock and missed sleep (wanted to mow the lawn in Bloomington at 3am wide awake but -thankfully, stopped by wife Sue).

Yep, good to be retired for sure.

Regards,

Dux -off to Tucson

From AvHerald.com:

Incident: Singapore B744 near Denpasar on Oct 26th 2015, sheepish smoke indication

By Simon Hradecky, created Tuesday, Oct 27th 2015 21:20Z, last updated Tuesday, Oct 27th 2015 21:20Z

A Singapore Airlines Boeing 747-400 freighter, registration 9V-SFI performing flight SQ-7108 from Sydney,NS (Australia) to Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) with 4 crew and a cargo of 2,186 sheep, was enroute at FL320 about 400nm south of Denpasar (Indonesia) when the crew received a smoke indication in a cargo bay, descended the aircraft to FL250 and diverted to Bali Denpasar for a safe landing about 45 minutes later. Emergency services did not find any trace of fire, heat or smoke.

The smoke indication was identified to be the result of exhaust gasses and manure produced by the sheep.

The aircraft was able to depart again after about 2.5 hours on the ground in Denpasar and reached Kuala Lumpur about 2.5 hours later.

I don't know what the size of elephant output would be expressed in sheep units, but that was a lot of sheeps!

I won't bother anyone with the time a fella got amoebic dysentery on one of our Recon patrols (didn't wait long enough after putting water tablets into canteen before drinking). He used all the patrol's toilet tissue before loading him on a Huey which, of course, had doors off. After a bit, he didn't bother wiping. Fellow team members were asked if they would help the helo crew clean up when we got back. Everyone got pretty busy and couldn't break free. Fella that created the mess was in no shape to do anything.

The handlers that travel with the large animals have drugs to euthanize them if they become a threat to the aircraft.

This Lufthansa Cargo video shows them hauling horses. It starts at 11.0 minute. It's a great video about flying freight.

Chuckle, I left New York's JFK one night around mid-night with a freighter going to HOU and LAX, as far as I knew there were only the 3 of us on board. Somewhere at cruise in darkness the "horse handler" came up top and sat down on the jumpsuit (so far silent). Then, in the darkness, he tapped me on the shoulder and said something, I must'a jumped three feet straight up!

>> ...in the darkness, he tapped me on the shoulder and said something, I

RMOAS. Randy, many years ago a fraternity brother told us about the first
important case he had as a young lawyer. Late at night a hearse was
transporting the dearly beloved who lived way out in rural Alabama. As they
did back then, the driver was black and the guy in charge was white.

They stopped at a diner and the supervisor went in for coffee. A fella
approached him and asked if he could get a ride to Mobile, the next big
town. The supervisor said sure, if he didn't mind sitting in back with a
stiff. No problem, he replied.

The driver was out in the weeds relieving himself and the super forgot to
tell him about the hitchhiker.

Later, the hitchhiker had a nicotine fit, but had run out of matches. So, he
tapped the driver on the shoulder and asked if he had a match. At highway
speed, the driver opened the door and stepped out. The driverless hearse
subsequently crashed, injuring the super and mutilating the dead guy.

The driver was suing the super for not telling him about the extra passenger,
the super was suing the driver for reckless and dangerous, the bereaved
family was suing the funeral home. My frat brother represented the super. I
don't remember how it all turned out. <g>

Sigh, I remember being rescheduled while in Narita -must have been in late 1980's since I was a B-747 1st Officer. (One of my last 1st Officer flights -and had a class assignment for B-727 Captain).

My normal schedule was passengers -but now, after almost 48 hours off in Narita, I was assigned to the last leg of a cargo flight of 254 dairy cows from Wisconsin. All in bins of 6 cows and all females with likely baby cows in the future. Landed in (not sure of spelling) Kowshung, Tiawan. This was the last leg and the Chief Pilots indicated we did not need to wear our uniforms.

Yes, the smell was terrible and they off loaded the cows at night in a little over one hour. We then flew the empty B-747F to Tiapai -then after 24 hours, deadheaded back to Narita.

The AB0747-200F at that time only had 2 air conditioning packs VS the normal 3 for normal passenger Boeings.

I guess the "dream" for Dux was how much I enjoyed flying both USN and Northwest. Now enjoying retirement and always thanking the NWA ALPA pilots that insisted on such good pension funding -that we survived the Chapter 11.

Regards -from sunny Tucson and no BP's tomorrow,

Dux

Terry C:

>>>> There was the Deakin story of the pig that got loose in a C-46 <<<<

I had a friend (helluva story teller) who was flying from South America to the states when a huge snake reared its ugly head between the two pilots, calmly looked around, then just as calmly he disappeared! They had a lengthy discussion trying to figure out at what altitude a snake would pass out from lack of oxygen.
Afraid I don't remember the rest of the story, but my friend was definitely still alive years later when he told the story to me et al over a beer (and after several others).

Much like that story - but different. This one involved G forces and the snake wasn't huge, just venemous. And single pilot.

Come to think of it, might've been one of Kirby's stories.
