Seems like a stretch on corporate competency... Though a little more CRM never hurt any refinery. Come their first FCC fire, though, how's Delta management going to decide what good looks like?

Been down this road before... In the 70s the railroads had this bright idea. Didn't work out.

My thoughts also, Delta would be better off buying some oil production like American did in the 80's.

Continental Can bought an insurance company in the `70s. One of the company veeps expressed opposition by commenting: "We know how to make stuff. What the hell do we know about insurance?" The financial machinations of that acquisition and some subsequent ones ended up destroying the company.

Delta knows how to move stuff by air. They ought to stick to what they're good at.

Is that what happened to Continental Can? When I was about 13 hanging around Morristown airport, they had a hangar and flight department, may have had the first corporate Jet on the field.

Jeff --I used to do work for American Can, but that was in the day when it
was closing plants and downsizing, and around the time that it bought some
chintzy mail-order outfit that I couldn't understand at all. The can (and
tube, a la toothpaste) business was interesting on the trips I took, spots
like Wausau (should have stopped in to see Gil, my only flights on
Republic), Tampa and Geneva, NY.

IIRC, didn't they have a LB-30/B-24A also? That's the Lib that we have now, went to Pemex in Mexico after CC had it.

Yup. Ever read "Up the Organization" by Robert Townsend? When he was head
of Avis, he asked the board what business Avis was in. The answer was
"renting cars without drivers". Given that, he got rid of a tour bus
subsidiary, a limo service, and a bunch of other businesses which were
irrelevant to that objective. It was part of the turnaround to "We're only
number two, but we try harder" which made Avis a worthy competitor at the top
of the market.

Scott, Continental Can also had a plant just inside the south entrance to
SWF. I did not realize they had gone belly up. Don't know what happened to
the plant; haven't driven by it in years. They employed quite a few people
there.

This link is a history of Morristown, lots of stuff I didn't know. There is a picture of the Con Can hangar with a b-24 inside.
http://www.mmuair.com/airport-information/mmu-history

Keyes Fibre had a Sweeeet A-26 (maybe On Mark?) picture windows, air stair door.

Best part was, nobody cared if a kid wandered in and out of hangars or abandoned bamboo bombers, old Stinsons etc.

Actually, no. What happened was that the "genius" who was the company president was playing financial games as a way of increasing revenue, buying and selling smaller companies. At one point, Continental Can sold a division and netted several hundred million in cash. That attracted a number of corporate raiders, including Jimmie Goldsmith. Continental sold itself to a white knight, Peter Kiewit, Inc., in what was a "minnow swallowing a whale" takeover. Kiewit then dismembered the company.

I don't have a magnifying glass to look at it with - but can anyone here make out the N number on that Consolidated thing in the Morristown hangar. Looks to me like "Diamond Lil" in her earlier days,

Didn't put it on here but was thinking that meb'be it was CC that had that MARTIN (Marauder) B-26, a white thing?

and great reading, some names that I was familiar with but didn't know who
they were, like Clyde Potts, whose name was on a local reservoir near my home.

Yup, thanks, from what Vic had told me, that was her no. before she went to Pemex from CC. We got her back for (IIRC) 4 R-1830-94s that Pemex needed. Their crew delivered her to Brownwood (No, NOT Brownsville). The first time that I can remember flying her with Dick Disney in Harlingen was in the later 60s. Type rating shows LB-30, NOT B-24. A green colored interior, been a LOT of work done to her since then. She's been to England in (I think) the 80s, Dave Hughes and crew.

From the stories I heard, Continental went to jets as soon as they could for corporate transport. The company had a number of their top brass killed in a crash of a converted bomber, maybe in the late 1950s?

My dad worked for the company. He told me that the company had pretty strict limits on the number of executives who could be on any one airplane, and that was in the late `70s. The memory of the crash haunted a lot of the old-timers in the company.

Yup, big improvement in safety, those old "piston pounders" were plumb a---d dangerous compared to the turbines. Best thing we ever did to improve flight safety is convert to using jet fuel for work at the airline. "For work, let's use jets, if I want to play/nostalgia, we can fly P.P.s on weekends."

Sorta. Household goods are en route. Airplane's at KGON, I'll have to come back for it, once weather gives me a good window for the trip. I start the drive out to KFAM on Friday with my cat Jake and a bunch of miscellaneous crap in the car.

Had three cats two months ago. Jaw cancer took Gracie six weeks ago, kidney failure took George two weeks ago. Gracie was a shock, I thought she had a tooth abscess, but no. That hit me hard for a few days, Gracie was my favorite. Hit George harder, once he realized she was gone for good. They grew up together and his kidney problems got a lot worse very fast. They're both over the rainbow bridge, now.

The only good point was when I went out to rent a place in mid-March, it was easier since, at the time, I had two cats. Most of the landlords wouldn't rent to someone who had more than two pets.
