Here's a recent Vanity Fair article on aviation passenger security screening:
Smoke Screening
As you stand in endless lines this holiday season, here's a comforting thought: all those security measures accomplish nothing, at enormous cost. That's the conclusion of Charles C. Mann, who put the T.S.A. to the test with the help of one of America's top security experts.

So true. My mental answer to the chirpy TSA "How are you today, sir?" is, "I'm out at the airport being treated like a criminal for the bazillionth time...so not great." I used to like flying - now it's just an undesirable job requirement.

Nothing, that is, except a perfect record of preventing hijackings or destruction of aircraft flying from US airports for ten years, with a million people a day boarding those aircraft.

I finally got to use a "Known Crew Member" checkpoint the other day - at last! Hopefully, the pointless checking of flight crews will end when this is implemented at ALL airports. Maybe I can start packing my Leatherman tool again! Useful for all kinds of jobs on the road... TSA super at DCA told me they expect to implement it there sometime in the first quarter. (He didn't say what year!)

The House Majority Report is a scathing put down for the TSA. Ineffective, wasteful and bloated with bureaucrats.

Geoff -- I haven't been shot by a robber on the streets of Manhattan yet, either, so I should thank the TSA?

I believe the point of the article was that there is actually no supporting evidence for that assertion - but we've sure spent a phenomenal amount of time, effort, and money hoping that there was some connection between the two things.

Geoff, I can't recall of one incident where a TSA agent has declared, "We gottcha" as he collared a would be hijacker during his boarding check. Not one.
The fact they have not caught one hijacker proves nothing. Maybe hijacking has just fallen out of vogue. Maybe their inspection is so poor, hijackers routinely escape detection and they, in turn, are so inept they can't do the jacking.

And the House is effective? Prudent? And not bloated with bureaucrats?

But remember the true reason for TSA. It was to make the average Joe feel safe enought o actually buy a ticket and board an airplane.
