The TSA sent out a clarification yesterday. Crewmembers who have previously cleared security will *not* have to be rescreeened, but we still might get a random screening at the gate.

I'm sorry. I am a pilot. They should just trust me. They have to at some point...I have access to a crash axe!

I think the problem is that they have no way to verify that you are who you say you are. You could be a guy who bought a pilot suit on the internet and printed up a nifty-looking fake ID. We need some kind of fast CASS-like system so that we can be verified to the TSA.

They have my fingerprints. I have been criminally background checked up the wazoo. I carry with me my passport, company ID, pilot's lisence, etc., etc. They even let me drive the the flying thingys once in a while. I have earned trust and respect. Me and my colleagues should start demanding that it be shown.

But how are they to know that you are you? The TSA doesn't have anyway to verify all of that, and that you are still employed, as airlines do with CASS for jumpseaters.

If you have already cleared security that day, does any of that really matter? If they want to know if I am me, all they have to do is ask <G>

Never mind that having to watch the TSA person distracts you from the very important job of checking over the aircraft.

I have a "sterile cockpit" rule while preflighting my helicopter. I might miss something otherwise.
