I never give a phone number. If they require it, I just walk out.

Funny thing is people complain about 'government surveillance' and yet they give out information to every store they shop at and every doctor/hospital they unthinkingly give their SSN.

Perception.. impression.

I recently bought an air compressor at Home Despot. They looked at me like I had two heads when I turned down applying for one of their house credit cards even thought that would have cut the price of the purchase by 10% (not insubstantial for an 80 gal, 175psi compressor).

Didn't seem to understand that someone can have enough credit already (and more importantly, I don't want yet another company peddling my financial info to the masses).
