I believe that "gone west" predates any space travel, etc.

Understood, but it's going to be harder to achieve orbiting velocity that way. In his case, it seems more appropriate.

Back in my high school days I went to an air show in Miami, and remember being pretty impressed by an F-8U flight demo flown by a Marine pilot. Few years later when they announced the "Original Seven", Glenn's name clicked in my mind and I remembered the announcer naming him...

Quite the accomplished fellow and a real example for many to follow. It would be nice to see more folks like him recognized. (Regardless of metaphoric direction he actually departed :))
