Arsenal of Democracy flyover
      #408561 - 05/07/15 08:16 PM

Al B. is busy :)
=======================================

More than 50 World War II aircraft will fly in formation over restricted airspace in Washington Friday in honor of the 70th anniversary of the Allied victory in Europe. But if you look overhead in Manassas on Thursday, you can get a sneak preview.

The planes and pilots, organized by the Arsenal of Democracy, will fly in historically sequenced formations to commemorate the war’s major battles, from Pearl Harbor to D-Day, ending with a missing man formation to “Taps.”

The group has planned tests flights above Manassas Regional Airport beginning at 11:25 a.m.

The Federal Aviation Administration earlier this year issued approvals to permit the flyover, which begins at 12:10 p.m. on Friday, May 8 over the Lincoln Memorial. The event features more than 50 vintage aircraft flying in 15 historically sequenced formations.

The airplanes will leave from Culpeper Regional Airport and Manassas Regional Airport, head into D.C. and fly north to south above the Potomac River to the U.S. Capitol. The planes will be up for approximately 40 minutes.

Well, it was indeed a great flyover - via cell phone from our daughter on the mall.

I had briefed her to look for perhaps just one last flying twin engine P-38 aircraft -but I don't think it was part of that group.

Forgot to reminder her to also notice the B-29, also just one flying and not sure it was part of that group.

Regards,

Dux - no flyover of BP's tomorrow.

Cap'n Dux, indeed the P-38 was in the mix...flying alone. Fifi (the B-29) was near the end, also unaccompanied.

The P-38s aren't down to one yet...half a dozen airworthy ones Stateside and about as many elsewhere.

Y'know what is really rare? Almost unbelievable to some folks - but true - the Grumman F6F Hellcat.

best, randy

Pretty cool thing to see - they went directly over our building. From a "sound" standpoint, I thought the three B-25s were the winner - but there were some beautiful aircraft up there. It's just amazing to think that we once had 12,000 B17s...

Scott,
That must have been fantastic. I had C-Span all qued up and then suddenly my day went to all $%^& and by the time I got back home, it was all done. I've seen brief clips but still haven't had a chance to watch all the flyovers. Wish they'd done it yesterday, but I fully understand it was timed to coincide with the date. Also would have been nice to see ground troops as well, but, well, a lot of them are still busy elsewhere.

Best,
Andy

Morocco is nice.

Actually, WAS nice, as I got back on Thursday. :)

3rd time I have been. All for work, but I would visit on my own dime.
