P-51 Inflight Breakups
      #407929 - 04/23/15 10:44 PM

I figured I'd ask you all (Rnady?) about something I read about today, for the first time, about the P-51.

In another group, somebody quoted from Mike Spick's book about the P-51, that it had a nasty habit of shedding its wings. Frankly, this is something I don't recall every hearing before.

Anyone have any factual information on this? Was this some design or fabrication issue? Or was this the inevitable issue that comes from having 19-22 year old pilots who are prone to ignore the limitations section of the P-51 Dash One?

Interested in hearing more.

Best,
Andy

Prollly a good reason why you didn't hear about it! Only once or so that I can recall reading about. IIRC, design, early! Gear door gapped at high speed.

Andy, my friend Steve Cavallo flew P-51's (and a lot of other stuff) for NACA during WWII. He did some testing related to -51's shedding wings, and the results were not what was expected (and involved a parachute).

Steve tells the tale in a NASA oral history, HERE. Too long to cut & paste, go to the link and search for this phrase: G forces on the wings. The following half dozen paragraphs are interesting.

The whole oral history interview is a good read. Steve is one of my heroes. Going strong at (I think) 95. Flies a Cardinal.

Frank

Piston rods failing under G loads...good luck anticipating that!

Great and hooking read, including the completely unexpected events of novels, but told in first person by a real life character to make it... far better?

So much better indeed, that I realize now I didn't reach for a smoke while reading and that's a first. Healthy reading too!

Frank -- Ha! I met Steve at a dinner back at the end of last year. It was a fun evening with him.

He flew when it was NACA (pre NASA). Same as the guy that'd checked me out in the CAF's SB2C Helldiver, Joe Algranti.

Frank (And everyone else)

Thank you! The moment I heard this story I just knew there was one place where I'd get the straight story.

I'm looking forward to reading Steve's account! Randy's description leads me to think it was a combination of some unanticipated issues and sometimes youthful exuberance.

Best,
Andy

Uff-dah! You just made me recall our academics instructor in that test pilot school! Andy wanted to make absolutely certain that each of us clearly understood the difference between the terms "interpolation" and "extrapolation".

Frank -- <<Flies a Cardinal>> Or a 210? There was one or the other that had an engine failure and I think he made the LI beach with it, or have I mangled the story?
