Japanese Surrender

Here is a film. You can hear MacArthur's voice on it.

This film is believed to have never been seen before, only shots of the surrender were known.
If you are a history buff you will enjoy this. General McArthur's voice is a rarity in these old film clips.

It is a 'must see' for the WWII history buff or anyone interested in history.

This is an actual film made of the surrender ceremony of the Japanese to McArthur in Tokyo Bay in September 1945.

The Actual voice of the General at this surrender ceremony has not been heard by the general public before this film.

We may have always seen the "stills" but never the film itself.

Anne, that film's been on TV numerous times and the address by MacArthur endless times -- it's essentially stock footage on the History Channel. When he says "These proceedings...are closed!" it's always sounded like a steel door clanging shut.

Well, the Battle Ship Wisconsin was much closer for that ceremony. But, the President wanted his home state battleship to be used for the ceremony. Not sure of this -but think that could be fact checked.

The 4 battleships were almost identical -and I spent 11 weeks on the BB-64, in the summer of 1955 as a NROTC midshipman (blue banded bastards -our hats had blue bands).

Regards,

Dux -wish I still had saved at least one of those old blue banded white hats.

Well, I'm sorry! It was new to me. I don't watch the History Channel. I copied what had been sent to me......

Did you ever hear about Santa's Checkride?

Yeah, he flunked...;-)

Good rule on Internet forwardings: "You have never seen this" usually means "**I** have never seen this"!

The video that is usually shown is only an excerpt. This is the first time I've seen the complete newsreel. Thanks for the link!

I've also learned that my midshipman battleship, USS Wisconsin, was much closer for the surrender ceremony. But, you know which State our President was from -thus a different BB and perhaps a delay of one day?

Regards,

Dux

Hi Anne,
Thanks for posting that. That was a singularly amazing event. No fanfare, just git-r-done. Must ‘a been some humiliating, humble pie for the Japanese contingent. Too bad. An obscene number of people perished to get to that point.
I wonder if that uncomfortable part of history is glossed over to any extent in the elementary education of Japanese school children. Seems that’s what’s happening in Germany and perhaps elsewhere?

Regards,
Tom Charlton

On our visit to Hitler's mountaintop chalet (known in Germany as the Kehlsteinhaus and as the Eagle's Nest everywhere else), we found the tour guides were entirely upfront.

But that attitude is not universal. They have a problem with people called Hitlerpilger (Hitler pilgrims) who walk up the hiking trail during the night and leave flowers and love notes on the remains of his main house, the Berghof...first thing the caretakers do in the morning is to remove them.

More recently I heard there was a convention hotel being built on the Berghof site.

Maybe. It wouldn't surprise me. They're having difficulty coming to terms with pressing women into service as "comfort women" (prostitutes for the military) during the war.

The Prime Minister can't attend a war memorial without creating political problems.
