AVSIG III questions
      #445509 - 12/04/17 05:22 PM

I've logged on to AVSIG III and I've watched the tutorial, several times.
Now I have some questions, I guess exposing my ignorance about modern
computers and how to use them.

1) How do I see only (but all) stuff posted since I last logged on?

2) I see eleven Forum titles on the Home page. What if I want to make a new
post that doesn't fit any of those subjects, like I would have in the old
Hangar Flying section?

3) I clicked on "Drones". How do I post a new message there?

4) On the Home page I see "Mark Channels Read". What is a "channel"? If I
click on that, what does it do?

I'm not sure as there's a function for that, but the threads are color-coded to indicate which ones have new content. There's a little double-down arrow that notes new stuff. Click on that and you're taken to the first new message in that thread.

You can't post at the top-level. Can't do it in SIG II either. You have to go into one of them, like Hanger Flying and click the "+ New Topic" button.

There should be a button near the top left that says "+ New Topic".

Ward: A list of messages posted since your last login appears to the right of the forum list. Posting new topics doesn't differ much from this software, so don't be afraid to click around and experiment. So far no one has broken anything over there, so I dare you to try :). You were initially browsing as a pending user, but now that you have the full posting permission set you'll see the posting buttons, etc.

Mike -- It's a heavy lift for those folks who were TapUBB exclusively, and never got used to the current UBB web interface. It's even a challenge for those who have used the UBB interface....

It’s time to start working out, then :).

Everyone should feel free to click around and try things. You can’t drop 300 pounds on yourself. I don’t even think you can get a hernia. The only lurking danger is getting run over by those bipedal horses.

Seriously, I’ll clean up any messes. I’ve already cleaned up a *bunch* of my own.

AVSIG III questions [Re: Mike Overly]
      #445555 - 12/05/17 05:33 PM

Mike, as Scott pointed out, for 25 years (even today) I've just
double-clicked on the AVSIG logo on my desk top, then pressed "n" (for new)
and in a few moments I see the new posts since my last visit. I just press
the space bar to go from one to the next. That's both straightforward and
simple. And that is usually all I want to do with AVSIG.

>> A list of messages posted since your last logon appears to the right of
the forum list. <<

On my screen, to the right of the forum list I see "Jump To--" and a list of
the forums. If you mean to the right, within the forum list, I see the name
of the last (?) poster, which may have been long before my last visit. I
don't see a list of unread posts, that I'm seeking.

Q: What is a "channel"? If I click on "Mark Channels Read", what happens?

Ward: When there are new messages since your last visit, you will see them to the right per this screen:

... If there are no new messages since that time it is normal to see the "jump to" section at the top, as you are seeing.

And "channels" on the new forum are the same things we have always called "sections" -- Hangar Flying is a channel, People/Places is a channel, etc. I did break the Aircraft section (channel) into sub sections this time around, since I think it presents that area better.

"Mark Channels Read" only tells the forum to quit giving you color icon notification of messages that it thinks you haven't read yet. It won't make any messages disappear from your view or in any way affect navigation.

I like the "new since last visit" feature.

I found that filter in the search options and turned it into a page element. I'm surprised it's not part of any of the forum templates.

How do you invoke that, Stephanie? That is about the only thing I want and
when I've asked here, the answer I got was that is not possible.

That's not what I'm seeing. What defines a "visit"? Logging out? I've rarely done that. I do see new messages but not the "new since last visit" screen you're talking about.

Ward -- That's what Mike circled in red in the message a few above this one in this thread.

There's no need to log out. The vB software uses session cookies to classify content as "new." The only way I think you might miss it is if you've got a tab that remains open with the forum in it, but even then, hitting "refresh" should bring that module up (assuming there has been new activity in the interim).

I just wish the box was wider, to so more of the title.

And if you stretch the entire window, the whole forum display does not expand, it just gets like watching an old TV on a wide aspect TV, big bars on each side.

If you leave the browser open, that may not work. I close the browser when I'm done with it. It seems to pick it up.

I note significant “white space” on Sig III, or since it’s the newest of the litter, “Siggy.” Is that to satisfy the tablet, phone, etc. need for white space? I know when we developed the most recent forum architecture for the Type Club, we wound up with that, as our so-called “experts” told us we needed that?

Personally, I like the calmer, softer blues, But That’s Just Me. (TM)

Best,
Andy

There are a few presentation options on III, accessed by the drop-down menu at the lower-left on the page footer. (The default is AVSIG VFR Blue -- click on that and the other options appear. The plain "AVSIG" theme has a little more atmospheric blue going on).
