Turbonormalized Baron
      #228633 - 12/22/08 05:30 PM

I got my Baron turbonormalized by Merlyn Products, and have been flying it for about 4 months now. If anybody has any interest, fire away and I'll be glad to answer questions.

I'd love to hear about it. What model Baron? How does that turbonormalizer installation differ from one from the GAMI people (even if they don't have one for the Baron)?

Hear about it? Heck, I'd like to fly it! Where do you live? :)

Do you have any pics?

The main differences between the Merlyn turbonormalizer and the TAT is no intercooler. No detonation, either, even at FL200 or Phoenix in September when OAT on ground was 110+. Manufacturer tested under the most adverse conditions for FAA detonation survey, and says the design of his system eliminates the need for intercooler at FL230 and below. So far, I agree.

Other goodies:
Gross weight increase to 5,700 lbs.
Single engine ceiling increase to 16,000'.
No change in cowling or nacelle mold lines.
Sea level manifold pressure to 23,000'.
220KTAS cruise.

>220KTAS cruise<

What altitude and fuel flow?

Do you run lean of peak?

I'm not a LOPer, at least not yet. No GAMIs at this point.

I've run 220KTAS anywhere between low teens and low twenties, usually around 17gph/side.

Keith:

I ran at 220KTAS from Dallas to Florida Tuesday LOP at 33 gph total. Can't do that in the P-Baron unless I'm light and it's near standard temp or colder. Heavier or warmer and my CHTs won't let me run higher power settings (I keep them at 380 or less). POH says I can do over 240, but it calls for CHTs of 420; that's great if you like buying cylinders frequently. Going a bit slower as I do has led to us being 100 hours over TBO now and still going strong, as you know. BTW, my gross is 6,200; so, you can understand how I'd perform a bit slower, but the pressurized cabin and K-Ice certs make it worth it to me. Oh, the factory P-Baron does have intercoolers.

Best,

Dave

CHTs on BeechTalk post were 400, once. Easily managed to 380 or less with mixture. Panel pic attached, too.

Keith picked right up on that Scott. Interesting how the marketing folks point out all that speed and don't mention much about cylinder life. Same thing for those that sell some upgrades. Can't blame them if reasonable.

Like I said, Beech had 420 CHTs on the P-Baron. Knew a fella whose CFI payed very close attention to that number on flights; the owner payed a lot to fly that way <g>. If it weren't for the GAMI folks including John Deakin, I'd still be flying that way and getting more Christmas cards and promotions from cylinder dealers <g> Poor guys, haven't needed them at all since I change to my current practice.

Best,

Dave
