Letter from a former student

Some days you get a big reward for your efforts. Here is part of a letter I received yesterday from a young woman who was 17 when she started training with me:

Quote:

The year that I spent as your student was one of the most rewarding years of my pilot career. You taught me everything that I needed not only to pass my private checkride but to make smart and safe choices while I fly for the rest of my life.... Now having my commercial ratings, I am able to reflect on my nearly 4 years as a pilot and appreciate all the time I spent out at the airport with you. If it were not for your patience and dedication with my training I am not sure i would be sitting where I am today. You showed me that hard work does pay off and that flying can be one of the most rewarding careers. Thank you for believing in me and helping me work towards my dream.

In my reply, I suggested she pay it forward when the opportunity presents itself.

Heartwarming. It is good to be appreciated.

It is even better to deserve it. Excellent.

Very nice!

I often think of the instructor I had for my private pilot training. He was working his way to the airlines, but unlike some of the stories you hear, he was a good instructor who cared about his students. He also worked in the Operations area at MSP, so he was able to show me around that area as well.

Gil, that is wonderful! Thank you for sharing it with us.

All too often we don't make the effort to thank someone who has done
something that significantly changed our lives for the better. The fact she
made that effort shows she will be successful in just about anything she
attempts. And I know it makes you feel good to have been a part of it.
Those are the rewards that make life worthwhile and enrich us beyond any
king's ransom.

Congratulations. That is one of the biggest rewards of teaching. I still cherish such a letter from a young woman who I flunked twice!

ad summum!

You got that right.

And I sent copies of that letter to two of the CFIs who trained me... because I would not be sitting where I am without their help and dedication.

Re: Letter from a former student

One of my favorite things in life, primary instructing.
The first couple lessons give the foundation for the entire career or lifetime of flying.
One must never forget just how important those first few lessons are.
Obviously someone didn't!

Congrats Gil!
