ATIS at KATL

I'm listening to the KATL ATIS tonight and the weather is reported as -

KATL 200258Z 21005KT 1/8SM R09R/P6000FT BR OVC002 16/16 A3012 RMK AO2 SFC VIS 1 1/2 T01560156 "Bird activity in area."

I'm thinking, "Really all the B1Rds are walking tonight." :))

With an RVR of 6000, that doesn't look bad to me.

It seems as though every single ATIS now has the warning about bird activity in the vicinity of the airport. Can't we change the AIM, or something, so that bird activity is assumed unless the ATIS says that it is NOT occurring?

BOS usually has warnings of *heavy* bird activity, triggering thoughts of wake turbulence delays ....

Departing Addison Sunday, tower advised me there was a dead sparrow on the runway about half way down. I told him a sparrow wouldn't be much of a problem for us. He responded it was pretty big, he was looking at it from the tower. I rotated well before the problem bird :-)
my fav is: bird activity in the area.

My last bird strike was a BOS "heavy". Coming in over the bay...saw it (sea gull, may have been Jonathan) coming from the left descending..smacked my right wing, out near the tip. I was dropping off, and it looked inconsequential, so I paid my fees and ferried to Laconia. There a mechanic looked up what was legal. Used a broomstick through an inspection plate to shallow out the hit. Got home and reskinned the area.

As George Costanza says...they usually move.. (the pigeon episode)

At Aspen, our wildlife issue was Richardson's ground squirrels. Not much problem per se, but their little corpses attracted a lot of scavengers.

I rolled over a groundhog one day taking off at Groton, CT. Advised tower to remove the road kill, and tower inquired if I needed assistance. "Negative, but the groundhog does."

Bird encounters can be a problem in soaring, because the soaring bird species use thermals the same way we do. Opinions differ on how to deal with it. I've often heard "Don't try to avoid, because the bird is better at it than you are and you'll just screw it up" -- but the one time I put that into practice, it didn't work. I wound up having to punch hard.

If you join a bird in a thermal and circle in the same direction, he'll generally do a good job of maintaining separation; if you circle the other way, he'll write you off as a dummy and go elsewhere.

Didn't I read somewhere that we figured out how to generate lift from laminar
shear by analyzing some unexplained flight behavior observed in condors?

Just once, in a C172 out of Caldwell in New Jersey, a little dot in my vision
started expanding rapidly into a hawk. I had just enough time to think,
"Holy crap!" when the bird folded its wings and fell below my line of
flight.

I'm glad that bird saw me in time, because I sure as hell didn't see it.

Specifically, from the curl. Even if the flow has zero vertical velocity everywhere, if it has a curl component, you can extract energy by circling in a constant 55-degree bank -- and certain birds do just that.

(Translation: Curl is a vector calculus term describing the kind of flow that makes lily pads in a stream rotate.)

Most birds will do that, but not canada geese. I don't know whether they're
stupid, stubborn, or both.

Dynamic soaring (using wind gradient near the surface) was "discovered" by watching the big sea birds. Gooney and Albatross.

My engineering adviser in college did that work (or at leas one of his grad students did). I found out about it when I asked about an RC glider in the lab. :)
