Any CFIs here signing off drone pilots?

As you can tell from the topic, I don't know much in this area.

Hi Mitch.
Nor do I.
Wasn’t aware of any required CFI drone sign off. Perhaps to do with FAA regs and airspace knowledge / awareness?

Regards,
Tom Charlton

Re: Any CFIs here signing off drone pilots?

Only so far after certificated pilots have taken the short FAA video on small unmanned aircraft system operations and received the certificate via online delivery. Then, an upload via IACRA and completing the form results in a new certificate being issued.

I understand it is similar for non-pilots although the required FAA knowledge test has more in depth coverage on airspace rules and therefore is more thorough. Once the knowledge test is satisfactorily completed it's a similar process with IACRA to obtain the certificate.

I've done the IACRA approval for another pilot, and had another CFI do the IACRA approval for me.

Read up on Part 107 here:

So if I did that, I'd have a commercial license for UAVs and a private ticket for manned aircraft?

Correct. You could be paid for your services as a drone pilot.

It seems to me, that the sign off is to verify ID, not sign them off on any knowledge basis.

And without having the first clue how to fly one, even!

Not sure why you wrote that. Are you referring to the RC craft registration that the FAA required about a year ago, but was recently struck down? I'm not sure this is necessarily tied to that.

The key thing with the Part 107 training and sign-off is something that most full-scale pilot would really appreciate. It trains the UAS pilots about weather, communications, and airspace -- especially airspace regs around airports and populated areas.

Yes, I was referring to the part the courts struck down.

Have I shown just where my knowledge level resides?

If our schedules meet up at Oshkosh, we'll have a few beers and I can school you on Part 107!

Unsure of my schedule yet, but will probably know July schedule in a few moments.
Be fun to fly in for Osh.
Maybe I can arrange hitching a ride on a GA craft?

Normally I'd say "Hop on board!" but Chris has a father / son combo and all their camping gear riding with us this year.

Maybe Ill put it out there.
Looks like I have a 4 day trip that week ends late Thursday evening LAX, weekend free.
Will probably hitch a ride on airlines, or maybe Fred Ex or Ups.
Will do some investigating on rental cars then decide.
Doubt anyone will be leaving LAX or SNA or surrounding areas with anything fast enough to get me there by Friday afternoon early evening.
As in the past, will make it work!

If, by chance, Chris's colleague cancels, I'll let you know. Then all you have to do is get to MSP, and I can get you from a hotel to FCM.
