Disney Wants Drones...

in Their Own No-Fly Zone

"Florida pilots know the rule well — you better steer clear of Disney’s Magic Kingdom, or else. It has been a no-fly zone for over a decade – a luxury afforded to none of the other 400 theme parks in the United States, and a point of contention lingering over “The Happiest Place on Earth.

But now Disney is asking the government for an exemption to the no-fly restrictions so that it can launch flocks of drones over Disney World and Disneyland, a move that has resurfaced frustrations and a debate in the aviation world over the merits of the no-fly zone."

Re: Disney Wants Drones...

There's a bit of a story behind that. The parks used to get a lot of banner towing and sightseeing rides, and didn't much mind. But then some tension arose when evangelical organizations began using banner towing to express opposition to Disney's unofficial annual Gay Days...and 9/11 gave Disney the political cover to get a no-fly zone.

Instead, he just shut down Meigs.

We used to fly into Meigs a lot back in the 80s. Some days our folks would walk to the office. ( Canteen Corporation was a subsidiary of Transworld Corp. ).

Hi Jeff,
Me too, back long bout 1968/9. Beach 18s and a Rice Rocket. Out’a KPKB we had a contract to fly Marbon people (subsidiary of Dupont). Chicago, Detoilet and other places round the Midwest. In decent wx Meigs was a sweet airport. Hmm . . . an overnight in Chicago usually snagged me a steak dinner on the company.

Can you imagine the ATC tower guys show’n up for work that morning? What the . . . heck?

Regards,
Tom Charlton (edited to add that . . . Amazon could deliver steaks via drones)<g>

Re: Disney Wants Drones...

In the 70's, OZ flew ORD-SPI. One of our greatest routes, lots of politicians, lots of traffic, (apparently) lots of money.

Then, some start-up decided to fly to SPI from Meigs. OZ retaliated. We got some twin Otters, got some 4-foot flight attendants, put some staff including my friend Jim Bubash at Meigs, and ran head-to-head.

Mase , the parent company for both of us was TransWorld Corp. . The airline was spun off when I went to work there in 84 . When we were using Meigs there was a commuter Trans World Express that operated there. We wore the same ties....

Tom, I'm sure you had days like we did, where there was freezing rain or snow heading toward Meigs, and they had no hangars, or at that time decide equipment. ( call the guys, and tell them we went to Midway !)

Eewww...That outfit was supposed to keep me in coffee and food through several years of graveyard shifts in the Eighties. Our feelings about it were -- ummm -- deeply felt <g>.

Hi Jeff,
I recall that in marginal WX we’d shoot approach to KMDW then scoot on over 8 nm to Meigs Field. Had to be legit VFR under the crud X-ing over. Think I was probably make’n bout a buck-two-ninety-five an hour but reaped a ton of salt.

Yup, only once that I recall, 1500 foot ceiling...(?). Also once, an approach to Gary, then up the shoreline.

Yep - our club members would do that, if required. Of course, the pace of a Cessna single was probably a bit easier/slower that what you were flying.
