Video Of R22 flight

This video was taken by a photographer who flies with me. It was taken about 3 days ago in another R22 with another pilot but you can see what it is like to be in a Robbie especially this time of year with the colors.

Re: Video Of R22 flight

Nice video, especially in HD!

I don't know very much about helicopter operations so a couple of questions...

The hover-taxi seemed a bit fast. Is that normal for a helicopter?

91.126 (I think) says that a helicopter is to remain clear of the fixed wing pattern. Why does the helicopter use the runway for takeoff then cross the runway on landing when he could stay completely clear of the runway?

Thanks...

Anne -- Lots of fun, great video, fun music.

Unnatural flying, however. <G>

(I think Larry may be going out as a Fed for Halloween. <GGG>)

Re: Video Of R22 flight

This fellow is known for his, Ummm, "cowboy" tactics. Yup, hovering a little too fast and not following standard procedures.

It is common at an airport with one runway to depart from and make the approach to the runway. And if you are coming from the other side of the runway it is okay to cross the runway as he did. It is a towered airport, and at this airport the practice area is on the other side of the runway from the hangar/ramp area. Avoiding the flow of fixed wing traffic has to do more with the pattern flying. At this airport, the helicopters doing patterns stay on the east side of the runway. They take off and land from the grass there. They stay below pattern altitude. There is a photo on this website that shows the layout.

Re: Video Of R22 flight

Here is a video of a portion of the flight I took with him today.

Please note. He speeded up the hovering portion dramatically. I did NOT hover that fast.

There was a bit of a gusty wind which is why the video wasn't smooth. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. 14G22, and at one point in the flight I had a 30 KT tailwind at 1000'. Went screaming by the site, at over 100 KTs. Turning around we crawled back. <G>

Re: Video Of R22 flight

Ok, I stand corrected, somewhat. From looking at the video that the photographer took of my flight he may have speeded up the video on this flight also. Clearly he had a no wind situation as well.

A little clarification, one thing we do to avoid the flow of fixed wing traffic is to remain below and inside the airplane traffic patterns. When possible we will make right traffic while the planes are making left traffic. Sometimes there can be restrictions for noise abatement.

Hey, I don't even rotate until 140, or so. :)

Ah, but I bet you can't come into a hover over the numbers on the runway.
